Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide epidemic.. 14%
of the world population has poor
vitamin D levels. (1) One study reports that it
affects 1 billion people worldwide. (2) Low vitamin D status is connected
to a wide assortment of diseases. Raising
vitamin D levels is beneficial and easy…if vitamin D supplementation is followed.
Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka encourages our Sitka chiropractic patients to check
and work to raise as necessary their vitamin D levels.
Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka is certain that positive health benefits
will follow from this effort.
DISEASES RELATED TO LOW VITAMIN D LEVELS
A widespread vitamin D deficiency is associated
with many diseases. The incidence of cancers like breast, colorectal, kidney, lung, and pancreatic
is related to low vitamin D levels. Diabetes, rickets, rheumatic
arthritis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer diseases, benign paroxysmal positional
vertigo, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, and fractures in adults are too.
(1, 2, 3) Vitamin D participates importantly in calcium
homeostasis, skeletal metabolism, and the function of immune, cardiovascular
and reproductive systems. (2) Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is also research-related
to vitamin D status and bone mineral density. (3) It responds well to vitamin
D3 supplementation. Checking the occurrence of osteopenia/osteoporosis in these patients is the test
as to the effectiveness of the treatment. (4) Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka
notes that this is interesting as these two conditions are also identified
as being influenced by vitamin D status too. Sitka
chiropractic care at Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka benefits Sitka chiropractic
patients with these conditions.
BENEFITS OF RAISING VITAMIN D LEVELS
Supplementing those who take antidepressants with vitamin D
is shown to improve the antidepressive effect. Researchers suggest
that vitamin D may be beneficial for other such conditions beyond just
depression like schizophrenia, cognitive disturbances, attention deficit
disorder, and autism. (1) Giving a daily same
dose of vitamin D (1000 units/kg I.P.) to post-surgical back patients on day one through day 21 alleviates
symptoms of neuropathic pain. (5) Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka sees how
these benefits are worth the work our Sitka
chiropractic patients would undertake to elevate
poor vitamin D levels.
HOW TO RAISE VITAMIN D LEVELS
A study of healthy young women showed that consuming
calcium plus vitamin D (1500 IU) by those with less than 20ng/L or 800 IU of
vitamin D by patients with levels of greater than 20
ng/L. Both witnessed their vitamin D levels increase. The elevation was seen
within the first 30 days
of the study for those taking calcium plus vitamin D. A thought-provoking side finding in this study: It is hard
to get people to do what is recommended! Only 67 of the 106
study participants did what they were to do for the 3 months of the
study! (6)
