Sitka Chiropractic Care of Headache and Tips for Headache and Migraine Prevention

Headaches and migraines are never welcome. Headache sufferers are usually very ready for tips on how to avoid them. Migraine (a primary headache) sufferers over the age of 50 find themselves members of a global community with migraine as a foremost cause of disability. (1) Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka offers some prevention tips and treatment relief ideas especially for our Sitka headache and migraine sufferers.

A healthy diet feeds the body and the mind. Researchers have described that migraine triggers come in a variety of forms - environmental, hormonal, and dietary. A high-quality diet effectively helps control migraine. Further, and more specifically, women with chronic migraine ate a poorer quality diet than that of women with episodic migraine. (2) Another study got even more specific with the type of diet helpful to migraine patients, specifically those who are overweight. A very low-calorie ketogenic diet was found to be preventive of episodic migraines. Effectiveness was noted within one month of the diet change. (3) Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka is not recommending that any of our patients try a specific diet now! If a Sitka headache sufferer chooses to try a new diet, Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka is here to chat and decide which diet (if any special one) is appropriate.

The same goes for vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D deficiency has been documented in 45% to 100% of migraine sufferers. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant features of vitamin D have opened its supplementation to considered inclusion in the care and prevention of headache and migraine. One study reported that trial doses of 1000-4000 IU per day decreased the frequency of migraine in addition to routine drug therapy. More study needs to be completed, but vitamin D supplementation appears promising. (1) Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka studies the nutrition of each individual Sitka chiropractic patient and suggests supplementation when applicable.

Headaches of all varieties – primary headaches like migraine and tension-type headache – are common complaints brought to the Sitka chiropractor. Research stated that complementary and integrative medicine - nutrition, movement (yoga), manual therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage, biofeedback, meditation, and mind-body strategies – was beneficial. More specifically, spinal manipulation, chiropractic care, some supplements, diet change and hydrotherapy are reported beneficial for migraine headache. (4)
