Sitka Chiropractic Nutrition: Gut, Bone, Chondroitin Sulfate
Osteoporosis and the gut. Two seemingly unconnected conditions may actually be connected beyond the fact that they both are internal body issues. Osteoporosis’ effect is often seen in bone health deterioration. Gut issues’ effect is often seen in digestive problems. Researchers today are discovering ties between gut health and osteoporosis’ effect on bone health. Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka helps Sitka chiropractic patients experiencing both issues!
OSTEOPOROSIS AND THE GUT HEALTH CONNECTION
Sitka osteoporosis is quite prevalent. Gut issues are, too. Gut health change via the use of probiotics has become more mainstream in recent years to help chronic diseases like autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases as well as cancer and diabetes. Now, researchers are looking at the health of the gut microbiome to address bone mass regulation which affects osteoporosis and osteopenia. (1) Senile osteoporosis is associated with a decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and modified microbiota. How these are linked in postmenopausal osteoporosis is yet unknown. A study that attempted to figure this out did find that there was decreased bacterial richness and diversity in postmenopausal osteoporosis with significant disparity in levels of phyla and genera in gut microbiota. (2) Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka finds these new discoveries connecting gut health and osteoporosis helpful in managing Sitka osteoporosis treatment planning.
DIETARY HELP FOR OSTEOPOROSIS
Sitka chiropractic care of osteoporosis is complex including spinal manipulation by way of the gentle Cox® Technic protocols, exercise, and nutrition. Framing osteoporosis as a condition likely involving the microbiota of the gut, researchers are now using dietary approaches to address osteoporosis. Nutritionally, a chondroitin sulfate/calcium complex improved the BMD and microstructure of the osteoporotic femur bone in a rat study. It also modified levels of the serum bone markers. This dietary intervention of chondroitin and calcium has the potential to ease osteoporosis and its symptomatology. (3) Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka is very familiar with the effects of chondroitin sulfate for disc health and is excited that it may also benefit osteoporosis.
