Guidelines for back pain care
recommend non-surgical care treatments
like spinal manipulation. So who delivers non-surgical care? A recent
study just came out and said that “Chiropractic is one of the
largest manual therapy professions in the US and internationally.” (1) Yes! Chiropractors like your Sitka chiropractor at Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka
welcome that responsibility. Your Sitka
chiropractor assists Sitka back pain and neck pain
patients be alleviated of the pain and improve
their quality of life.
New Back Pain Care Guidelines
The newest guideline for non-surgical treatment
of patients whose back pain and/or leg
pain just started advocates patient education (incorporating
a talk about treatment outcome), exercise (advice
to keep active) and manual therapy, not routine imaging, targeted treatment,
extraforaminal glucocorticoid injection, paracetamol, NSAIDs and opioids. (2) Chiropractic
offers all three!
Who Sees a Chiropractor?
24% of US adults pursue chiropractic
care in their lifetime. 8.4% of US adults obtained
chiropractic care in the past year. (1) Why do not more patients get
chiropractic care? The back pain care guidelines written by
groups like the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society call
for non-surgical approaches like spinal manipulation. (3) Even
the physical therapists are upset! “Although therapies
delivered by PTs are promoted as a first-line treatment for low back pain, PT
referral rates remain low.” Only 10.1% of primary care provider visits for low
back pain ended with a physical therapy referral. A patient
with Medicare or Medicaid was even less likely to get a referral. Where
do these patients with low back pain and leg pain go? What do they do about their low back pain and leg pain sciatica?
The primary care physicians wrote opioid prescriptions more often. (4) Your Sitka chiropractor proposes
a non-surgical, non-drug way to pain relief.
