Sitka Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk Of Cognitive Decline, Osteoporosis & Fracture Risk
Thoughts of the Mediterranean bring postcard-worthy images of beautiful blue ocean waters, sandy beaches, clear blue skies…and food? Yes, food! Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka shares nutrition tips, and the Mediterranean diet is bantered around the nutrition world for its multiple health advantages as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are healthy for all of us in this Sitka chiropractic family!
BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the expanding recognition that diet plays a valuable role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being created. A recent paper with suggestions for guidelines recommended a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver calcium and protein sufficient enough to preserve normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related to a reduced risk of fracture. (1) In other studies, the Mediterranean diet has been described as reducing hip fracture risk. Another new paper states that there is evidence that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also lower hip fracture risk in addition to risk of lumbar spine osteoporosis in females. (2) A study just published this past month pointed out that older adults who followed the Meditterranean Diet more strictly had reduced chances of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced osteoporosis odds, lower probability of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Arctic Chiropractic, Sitka finds these new studies quite interesting to share with our Sitka chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
Good stuff! Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It suggests avoiding sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
